FC Cincinnati 2 defeated New York City FC II by a score of 1-0 on April 14, with Cheikhou Niang’s early goal deciding the match.
The result marks a challenging start to the season for New York City FC II, which has now recorded two draws and one defeat in its first three games. The team fielded a young lineup for this away fixture, including five players from the club’s academy system.
The match began quietly, with few chances until Niang capitalized in the 14th minute after Félix Samson won possession and set him up for a close-range finish. New York City FC II responded quickly through Henrik Hvatum and Gil De Souza but were unable to convert their opportunities into goals. Despite sustained pressure and several attempts—most notably from Hvatum, Sebastiano Musu, Joseph Suchecki, and Drew Kerr—the visitors could not find an equalizer.
Goalkeeper Mac Learned was called upon multiple times during the first half to keep his side in contention, making key saves against Leonardo Orejarena and Deiver Mosquera. In attack, NYCFC II created several promising moments but were repeatedly denied by Cincinnati goalkeeper Fabian Mrozek.
Throughout the second half, head coach Matt Pilkington made several substitutions in search of an equalizer. Players such as Dylan Randazzo, Cooper Flax, Jacob Arroyave, Jonny Lopez, and Uriel Zeitz entered the game as NYCFC II continued to push forward. However, their efforts fell short as Mrozek continued to make crucial saves late into stoppage time.
New York City FC II will look to bounce back in its next match against CT United on Friday, April 17 at 7:00 PM Eastern Time.
