Columbia University’s women’s soccer team overcame a two-goal deficit to secure a 2-2 draw against Penn on Saturday at Rocco B. Commisso Soccer Stadium in New York. Sophomore midfielder Annie Faraone scored both goals for Columbia in the second half, helping the Lions recover after trailing at halftime.
The draw brings Columbia’s overall record to 4-5-3 and their Ivy League record to 2-1-1. The team rebounded from a previous loss to Dartmouth and continued its pattern of late-game comebacks, with five of their last six matches featuring decisive or equalizing goals in the final 15 minutes or later.
Penn took an early lead with first-half goals from Abbey Cook and Magali Capdevila. However, Columbia dominated play after halftime, outshooting Penn 14-1 in the second half and earning eight corner kicks. Faraone started the comeback in the 71st minute with a long-range shot into the bottom right corner of the goal. She then tied the match in the 82nd minute by scoring during a scramble near the net.
Columbia finished with a total of 21 shots compared to Penn’s six, including an 11-2 advantage in shots on goal. Goalkeeper Samantha Mahoney made several important saves throughout the game to keep Columbia within reach.
With this result, Columbia has extended its unbeaten streak against Penn in New York City to over 12 years and has now won six consecutive matches against them.
The match also served as Columbia’s annual Breast Cancer Awareness Pink Game. The team worked together to raise funds for cancer research, with all proceeds going to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.
Columbia will remain at home for its next game, hosting Yale on Saturday, October 18 at 7 p.m. More information about Columbia’s schedule is available on their official athletics website.
