Experts dispel myths about running and knee health

Contrary to common belief, running does not inherently damage the knees. Experts assert that with proper technique, running can actually strengthen joints and lower the risk of developing arthritis.

James N. Robinson, MD, a sports medicine physician at HSS, addressed the misconception that running causes arthritis. “There is no convincing data that running or impact activities causes arthritis,” he stated. However, he noted that injuries like runner’s knee, stress fractures, or tendonitis might occur due to poor form or a rapid increase in mileage.
