Far Rockaway, New York — Episcopal Health Services (EHS), in collaboration with the Swim Strong Foundation and the New York City Parks Department, is urging residents and visitors of Rockaway to prioritize water safety as World Drowning Prevention Day approaches on July 25.
The initiative aims to promote awareness about drowning risks and encourage safe recreational practices along local beaches and pools. Donald T. Morrish, MD, MMM, Chief Executive at EHS, emphasized their dedication to community health and safety by stating: “At EHS, we are committed to the health and safety of our community. As families head to beaches and pools, maintaining a strong focus on water safety is critical to preventing avoidable tragedies and ensuring a safe, enjoyable experience for all.”
Drowning remains a leading cause of unintentional death worldwide, particularly affecting children. Education plays a crucial role in prevention efforts in communities like the Rockaways.
The Swim Strong Foundation offers essential tips for water safety: always swim with a buddy; know personal limits; ensure parents supervise children closely; and understand water conditions. Shawn Slevin, Executive Director of Swim Strong Foundation, remarked on the importance of education: “I have seen firsthand how access to situational knowledge of water and swim skill education can transform lives. World Drowning Prevention Day is an urgent reminder that drowning is fast, silent, and preventable.”
NYC Parks Commissioner Iris Rodriguez-Rosa highlighted the necessity of preparedness: “Our lifeguards are trained to respond in seconds, but prevention begins before you enter the water.” She advised swimming only when lifeguards are present and utilizing free swim classes offered by NYC Parks.
This joint effort seeks to enhance public understanding of water safety measures so that everyone can enjoy summer activities safely.
