Episcopal Health Services (EHS) has received $27.2 million from the New York State Health Care Facility Transformation Program IV to upgrade and expand critical care services at St. John’s Episcopal Hospital in Far Rockaway. The funding will support the construction of a new critical care unit above the hospital’s Emergency Department, increasing capacity to 28 beds and replacing the current third-floor Critical Care/ICU Unit.

The grant is part of a statewide initiative that supports projects aimed at expanding access, modernizing healthcare infrastructure, and assisting providers serving vulnerable populations across New York. EHS is one of 55 recipients selected for this round of funding.

“New York State’s transformation program prioritizes projects that expand access, modernize infrastructure, and support providers serving vulnerable and underserved populations,” said Donald T. Morrish, MD, MMM, Chief Executive Officer at EHS. “This grant is a powerful acknowledgment of the critical work EHS provides every day to ensure that every patient — regardless of ZIP code — can access safe, high-quality, and compassionate care.”

The planned improvements are intended to help reduce wait times and provide faster delivery of critical care services for residents in the Rockaways, Five Towns, and surrounding communities.

Episcopal Health Services operates on the Rockaway Peninsula in Queens and offers emergency as well as ambulatory care to diverse and medically underserved populations in the area. The system provides preventive, diagnostic, treatment, and rehabilitative services to all individuals regardless of their ability to pay.
