Episcopal Health Services (EHS) announced that its Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) and Training program, which is accredited by the College of Pastoral Supervision and Psychotherapy, will now offer expanded career options for graduates. This follows national recognition from the Association of Professional Chaplains (APC) and the Board of Chaplaincy Certification, Inc., which have approved the College of Pastoral Supervision and Psychotherapy as a provider of CPE toward national certification.

As a result, individuals who complete EHS’s CPE program and achieve chaplaincy board certification will be eligible for positions with organizations such as the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and other institutions.

“Our Clinical Pastoral Education Program has long prepared future chaplains to deliver compassionate, person-centered care,” said Donald T. Morrish, MD, MMM, CEO of Episcopal Health Services. “This new recognition affirms the excellence of our program, while opening important new pathways for our graduates to extend their service, including to our nation’s veterans who deserve the very best in spiritual care.”

The EHS CPE and Training Program provides supervised practical experience in spiritual care for patients, families, and staff within a diverse hospital environment. The nationally accredited program focuses on interdisciplinary teamwork, professional growth, and holistic support for communities dealing with complex health needs.

“This is a powerful affirmation of the work our trainees and supervisors do every day,” said Pastor Asnel Valcin, Psy.D., BCCC, Director of Pastoral Care & Education at EHS. “With this approval, our graduates can bring their skills to a broader range of institutions, including the VA, where the need for professional chaplaincy is profound.”

Episcopal Health Services operates on the Rockaway Peninsula in Queens, New York. The health system delivers emergency and ambulatory services to an area that is both culturally diverse and medically underserved. It provides comprehensive preventive care as well as diagnostic treatment and rehabilitation to all residents regardless of their financial status or faith background.
