Redshirt junior guard Dylan Darling has been named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll for the first time this season, according to an announcement from the conference office on President’s Day.
Darling played a key role in extending St. John’s Red Storm Men’s Basketball team’s winning streak to 11 games, which is their longest since opening the 2018-19 season with 12 consecutive wins. The point guard averaged 19.5 points on 55 percent shooting, along with 6.5 rebounds and two steals per game over recent matchups.
During victories over Xavier and Providence, Darling set or matched season-highs in nine different statistical categories. As a transfer from Idaho State, he achieved new season-best numbers in scoring (23), rebounding (8), and made free throws (8).
Over his last three games, Darling is averaging 16 points while shooting 58.3 percent from the field. After starting the year making just one of his first fifteen three-point attempts, he has improved to hitting 17 of his last 36 shots from beyond the arc, a rate of nearly 47 percent.
In Monday’s game at Madison Square Garden against Xavier, which ended in an 87-82 win for St. John’s, Darling scored 16 points on five-of-nine shooting, collected five rebounds and contributed four assists.
He followed that performance with his best outing of the season at Amica Mutual Pavilion on Valentine’s Day. Darling scored 18 of his season-high 23 points in the second half to help lead St. John’s comeback effort. He also recorded eight defensive rebounds, three steals and made eight out of nine free throw attempts.
Darling is now the fifth St. John’s player this season to receive recognition from the conference, joining Zuby Ejiofor, Bryce Hopkins, Dillon Mitchell and Oziyah Sellers. Last year he was named Big Sky Player of the Year and was one of only three NCAA Division I players ranked inside the top-30 nationally for both scoring (19.7 PPG) and assists (5.7 APG) while playing for Idaho State.
St. John’s Red Storm Men’s Basketball team will return to action Wednesday night as they bring a program record ten-game BIG EAST road winning streak into their matchup against Marquette at Fiserv Forum.
The team operates out of Queens, New York and participates in the Big East Conference under the Red Storm nickname within St. John’s University athletics. Over its history it has won six Big East Tournament championships and two NIT titles according to its official website.
