For the second time this season, Daniela Abies, a forward for St. John’s women’s basketball team, has been named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll, according to an announcement from the league office.
During the week, Abies averaged 14 rebounds and 9.5 points per game while shooting 66.7% from the field and 70% from the free-throw line. She started in both games against Georgetown and Seton Hall.
In the matchup against Seton Hall, Abies was tied as St. John’s leading scorer in a 59-56 road win that secured the team’s first regular-season sweep of Seton Hall since the 2019-20 season. Against Georgetown, she recorded seven points, two assists, one block, nine rebounds, and matched her career-best with four steals.
Abies also achieved her third double-double of the season during the victory over Seton Hall, finishing with 12 points and a season-high 19 rebounds. This performance marked the highest rebounding total by a Red Storm player since Kayla Charles collected 20 rebounds on December 9, 2018.
A transfer from Wichita State and currently a redshirt junior, Abies has now received her second weekly honor in the BIG EAST this season. She is one of three players from St. John’s recognized by the league this year, alongside Brooke Moore and Sa’Mya Wyatt.
St. John’s will next host No.1/1 UConn at Madison Square Garden on March 1 for its first-ever standalone women’s college basketball game at that venue. The game is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. and will be broadcast nationally on TNT/truTV.
