Sherif Soliman, who has served as Senior Vice Chancellor for Budget and Finance and Chief Financial Officer at the City University of New York (CUNY), has been appointed director of the Mayor’s Office of Management and Budget. CUNY Chancellor Félix V. Matos Rodríguez released a statement congratulating Soliman on his new role.
“I want to congratulate Sherif Soliman on his appointment as director of the Mayor’s Office of Management and Budget. New York City will be extraordinarily well served by Sherif’s deep expertise, steady leadership and unwavering commitment to effective public service,” said Matos Rodríguez.
During his tenure at CUNY, Soliman managed billions in state and city operating funds and tuition revenue. He was credited with strengthening financial controls, reducing structural deficits, modernizing business operations across 26 colleges, enhancing strategic sourcing, improving financial transparency, and supporting academic priorities while maintaining fiscal stability.
“Sherif brought to CUNY a distinguished record of public service, including his leadership as Commissioner of the New York City Department of Finance under Mayor Bill de Blasio and senior roles in the Adams administration. That experience has been invaluable in navigating complex intergovernmental relationships and advocating effectively for the resources our students, staff and faculty need to succeed,” Matos Rodríguez added.
The chancellor concluded: “I thank Sherif for his outstanding service to CUNY and wish him every success in this important new role. We are proud that once again, one of our senior leaders is being called to serve the people of New York City at the highest level.”
