(May 31st, 2023, Washington, DC): Today, the United States House of Representatives voted on H.R. 3746, the “Fiscal Responsibility Act” of 2023. This legislation claims to stop the out-of-control inflationary spending that has stymied American families and businesses for the last three years. The so-called “Fiscal Responsibility Act” would tack 4 trillion dollars onto our national debt and fails to make meaningful spending cuts.
Congressman Santos issued the following statement in opposition to the Fiscal Responsibility Act:
“I do not want to look back in the future and bear the burden of stiffing the American people with a government drunk on overspending when I had the opportunity to stop it,” says Congressman Santos. “We need effective and meaningful spending cuts – this bill is loaded with exceptions that cost billions, and it is riddled with concessions rather than negotiations. The bill will shuffle money around and, in some cases, print more money. This bill is also designed to operate in 2-year increments in tandem with the election cycle. Congress needs to be in this based on making real change, not protecting their seat in Congress. A good starting point for a more favorable bill would have been to find a place in the 4 trillion dollars to raise the SALT tax deduction cap.”
