WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Rep. Gregory W. Meeks (NY-05) issued the following statement on the passage of the Debt Ceiling Agreement:

“The Bipartisan Budget Agreement prevents the worst possible outcome: defaulting on our debt. Democrats are working tirelessly to protect important resources and services for the American people such as Social Security, Medicaid, Medicare, and veteran benefits. I commend President Biden and White House negotiators for negotiating an agreement that blocked the draconian cuts that extreme MAGA Republicans tried to impose on working families.

“It’s clear: Democrats will always choose to govern responsibly. On May 31, 2023 ’s vote to pass the debt deal was no exception. I urge my Senate colleagues to swiftly pass this measure and send it to the President’s desk for his signature.”
