The Columbia wrestling team competed at the Rider Tri-Meet in Lawrenceville, New Jersey on Sunday, finishing with one win and one loss. The Lions started the day with a 32-9 victory over Clarion, then lost to host Rider by a score of 24-19.
Columbia’s overall record is now 2-3 for the season. Aaron Ayzerov and Vincent Mueller both won their matches in each dual, contributing significantly to the team’s performance. Other key victories came from KJ Monaco, Cesar Alvan, Nick Fine, and Jack Wehmeyer during the win against Clarion.
Clarion took an early lead in the opening match after winning at 125 and 133 pounds. Lorenzo Frezza responded for Columbia with a technical fall victory. Monaco earned his first dual win of the season at 149 pounds. After Clarion regained a brief lead at 157 pounds, Columbia secured five consecutive wins to finish out the dual: Alvan (decision), Fine (major decision), Ayzerov (fall), Wehmeyer (major decision), and Mueller (fall).
In the second dual against Rider, Columbia again fell behind early when Sulayman Bah lost by fall to Tyler Klinsky. Wins from Evin Gursoy (technical fall) and Frezza (medical forfeit) gave Columbia an 11-6 lead. However, Rider responded with four straight wins to build a ten-point advantage. Ayzerov narrowed the gap with a technical fall victory before Brock Zurawski clinched the dual for Rider with a close decision over Wehmeyer. Mueller closed out competition with a decision win at heavyweight.
