The Columbia wrestling team secured a 38-9 win over Harvard, taking eight of ten matches and clinching at least a share of the Ivy League title. This marks the team’s first conference championship since 1982.
“I’m super proud of the team, they really rallied together,” said Andrew F. Barth Head Coach of Wrestling Donny Pritzloff. “We had a great two weeks of training, you saw it tonight, the guys were scoring a lot of points. They were executing, they’re getting after it. And that’s what we preach every day, guys getting after it. I’m just excited for the whole program. All the donors, all the alums, all the extra wrestlers, and all the people who have come through here. This is a really exciting moment, and we are going to put a stamp on it tomorrow.”
With this victory, Columbia’s dual record stands at 9-3 overall and 4-0 in Ivy League competition this season. The team can claim sole possession of the title with a win against Brown in their next match.
Sulayman Bah started off for Columbia with a technical fall over Logan Brzozowski (16-1). Evin Gursoy followed with a major decision against Coleman Nogle (16-4). Lorenzo Frezza contributed by pinning Dante Frinzi late in his match.
Columbia suffered losses at 149 and 157 pounds but regained momentum when Cesar Alvan defeated Joseph Cangro 8-5 after coming from behind in the third period.
Nick Fine nearly achieved another technical fall before securing a major decision over Haden Bottiglieri (10-0). Joe Curtis added his eleventh win by fall this season against Division I opponents by defeating Matthew Walsh at 184 pounds.
Jack Wehmeyer pinned Hudson Skove early in their match at 197 pounds while Vincent Mueller completed Columbia’s sweep with a major decision over Daniel Bittner at heavyweight.
