Columbia women’s tennis defeats NJIT for seventh consecutive home win

The Columbia women’s tennis team, ranked 54th nationally, secured a decisive 4-0 win over NJIT on Sunday at the Philip & Cheryl Milstein Family Tennis Center. With this result, Columbia’s season record stands at 9-3 overall and remains perfect at home with seven victories.

Columbia gained an early advantage by capturing the doubles point. The pairing of Michelle Li and Amber Yin achieved a 6-1 victory against Paula Menendez Alvarez and Lusia Hepcal Barcan. In another match, Emily Baek and Sophia Wang also won 6-1 over Diana Fernandes and Petra Koszo. The match involving Gayathri Krishnan and Sabrina Lin was tied when play was stopped.

In singles matches, Amber Yin delivered a straight-set win (6-2, 6-1) against Lusia Hepcal Barcan to extend Columbia’s lead. Gayathri Krishnan followed with another strong performance, defeating Laura Wipfli 6-2, 6-1. Michelle Li then clinched the overall match for the Lions with a commanding 6-2, 6-0 result over Asima Sazan.

At the time the contest concluded, Sophia Wang, Emily Baek, and Margaret Hui had all secured their first sets in their respective matches.

Columbia will next face FIU in Miami on March 18th. The match is set to begin at noon.
