Columbia University’s women’s soccer team faced Pepperdine University in Malibu on Thursday, opening their two-game west coast trip. The Lions were down 1-0 at halftime and ultimately lost 3-0 after Pepperdine scored twice in the final ten minutes.

Early in the match, Columbia goalkeeper Samantha Mahoney made a significant save against Tatum Wynalda to keep the game scoreless. Despite this effort, Pepperdine took the lead in the 29th minute when Tabitha LaParl scored from a free kick just outside the box.

Both teams’ defenses held firm for much of the game until Pepperdine extended its lead late. In the 80th minute, Wynalda delivered a corner that Peyton Leonard headed into goal for a 2-0 advantage. Less than two minutes later, Layla Simon added another goal following an assist from LaParl.

Pepperdine maintained its defense through the final minutes to secure a shutout victory.

Columbia will next play Loyola Marymount on Sunday in Los Angeles. More information about Columbia’s women’s soccer schedule is available at GoColumbiaLions.com.
