Columbia volleyball falls to Brown in straight sets despite strong effort

Columbia University’s volleyball team lost to Brown University in three sets on Friday night at Levien Gymnasium. The match scores were 25–22, 25–19, and 25–19. Columbia showed strong serving with a total of seven aces and maintained close competition throughout each set.

Senior Eva Atkins led the Lions with eight kills, hitting .200 on 20 attempts and adding a block assist. Sophomore Charlotte Gravlee recorded six kills with a .545 hitting percentage and contributed an ace. Elena Maynulet also had six kills along with four digs. Setters Ruby van der Heide and Clara Yu each had 13 assists.

In the first set, Columbia took an early lead and remained competitive through five ties. Lauren Farris delivered two aces in the opening frame, helping keep the score close. Brown managed a late surge to secure the first set win.

During the second set, Atkins continued to be effective offensively while teammate Williamson added two kills from the middle position. Maynulet’s ace brought Columbia within four points at 17–13 before Brown finished the set on a service ace by Hanna Flannery and a kill from Mariia Sidorova.

The third set was closely contested, with eight ties up to 16–16 after kills by Atkins and Gravlee. Avery Jones made her debut collegiate kill off the bench for Columbia. Defensive efforts were led by Delaney Seaman’s six digs, supported by Farris’ back-row coverage. Despite these efforts, Brown closed out the match with another late run.

Brown ended the match with a .264 team hitting percentage; Sidorova led their offense with 13 kills while Julia Kakkis tallied 27 assists and Jesse Golden recorded a match-high 14 digs.

Columbia now holds an overall record of 2-13 (0-5 Ivy League). The Lions will play next against Penn in Philadelphia next Friday at 7 p.m.
