Columbia University Irving Medical Center (CUIMC) recently hosted an event titled “Columbia University and CUIMC: A History of Resilience and Change,” focusing on the institution’s ability to adapt and persevere through challenging times. The event, organized by the Office of Well-Being, brought together faculty, staff, and students to reflect on historical moments that have shaped the university and its medical center.

James McKiernan, senior vice dean for clinical affairs and CEO of ColumbiaDoctors, addressed attendees by acknowledging the perception that current challenges are unprecedented. “Not a week goes by when someone stops me to say this must be the most stressful and difficult time in our history,” said McKiernan. “And I thought, is it?”

To prepare for his remarks, McKiernan utilized resources from CUIMC’s Augustus Long Library and consulted with Katherine Satriano, head of archives and special collections. During the presentation, both McKiernan and Satriano highlighted key examples of resilience, innovation, and transformation throughout Columbia’s history.

Monica Lypson, vice dean for education, explained that the event was inspired by feedback from staff listening sessions. She stated that these sessions suggested learning about how Columbia has endured past hardships could provide valuable insights for navigating current issues.

Satriano encouraged participants to consider which aspects of historical responses—such as adaptability or persistence—are most meaningful today. She said, “During times of change, identifying history that resonates with us can shed light on the community values that drive our resilience.” She added: “We are all a link in a lineage of resilience.”

The gathering is part of ongoing efforts by CUIMC’s Office of Well-Being to foster empathy and strengthen connections within its community.
