Columbia University’s track and field team began the Ivy League Indoor Heptagonal Championships with several notable performances, earning three medals and advancing 12 athletes to the finals scheduled for tomorrow.
Senior Joshua Adams secured a silver medal in the men’s long jump with a mark of 7.31 meters. Sophomore Rocco Carpinello finished just behind him in fourth place, jumping 7.19 meters.
The men’s team accumulated 14 points by the end of day one, placing them third overall. The women’s team has not yet scored any points.
Junior Parker Kim contributed to the team’s score by finishing fifth in the men’s weight throw with a distance of 20.01 meters.
Senior Haydn Brotschi won his preliminary heat in the men’s 400-meter event, qualifying for the finals with a time of 46.82 seconds. Brotschi also posted a season-best performance in the 200-meter preliminaries, clocking 21.46 seconds to finish third overall ahead of finals.
Sophomore Caden Cutchall set a personal record in the men’s 500-meter preliminaries, finishing in 1:03.62 and moving on to compete in the final round.
In the men’s 800-meter preliminary race, senior Jacob Van Orden was first across the line at 1:50.95, while junior Justin Gottlieb followed closely at 1:51.36; both advanced to Sunday’s final.
Senior Lucy Henkel placed sixth overall in the women’s 800-meter preliminary with a time of 2:08.58, keeping her eligible for NCAA indoor qualification consideration.
Senior Matt Gatune finished second overall in Heat Two of the men’s 1,000 meters at 2:24.43, while junior Nicholas Hayden took sixth place overall after running Heat Three in 2:30.07.
On the women’s side, senior Daniela Quintero achieved a personal best during her own preliminary round of the women’s 1,000 meters by clocking in at 2:50.02 and finishing fifth overall for Columbia; first-year Meredith Wolfe also set a personal best at seventh place with a time of 2:51.03.
First-year Adam Jaros registered his best indoor leap so far this season—6.29 meters—to take seventh place among competitors.
The championships continue Sunday beginning at 11 a.m., where Columbia will look to add more medals and points to its tally as athletes compete for final placements.
