The Columbia softball team secured a sweep over Dartmouth on April 4, winning both games of Saturday’s doubleheader. The Lions won the first game 18-6 in five innings and completed the series with an 8-0 victory in six innings.
The performance was highlighted by Columbia’s offensive output, as the team scored a total of 28 runs on 28 hits throughout the day. Ten of those hits were for extra bases, including six home runs, three doubles, and a triple.
Savanna Messner led the power surge with two home runs, moving her into a tie for fifth all-time in program history with Maggie Johnson at 18 career home runs. She is now one behind former teammate Cami Neal for fourth place. Caylene Nguyen, Juju O’Brien, Alicia Marzouca, and Kyra Mason each contributed a home run as well.
In game one, after trailing early by two runs, Columbia responded with eight runs in the second inning. Messner hit a three-run homer to start the scoring rally. Additional contributions came from Sarah Mikami, O’Brien, Marzouca and Tatum Hubble during that inning. Lily McCord earned the win for Columbia while Charlotte Laidler pitched two innings in relief.
Game two saw Columbia take an early lead again thanks to Nguyen’s two-run homer in the second inning. Mads Lawson pitched a complete game shutout allowing only two hits and striking out two batters—her eleventh complete game this season.
Columbia will return to action next Saturday for a doubleheader against Yale.
