The Columbia men’s tennis team, ranked No. 37, defeated No. 39 Yale with a score of 5-2 at the Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center on Sunday, Apr. 5.
This win brings Columbia’s record to 12-6 in dual matches for the season and marks their second victory in Ivy League play. The team has now won three consecutive matches.
Columbia took an early lead by securing the doubles point after Aditya Govila and Thanphat Boosarwongse won their match against Eric Li and Jim Ji, followed by Sachin Palta and Andrew Ena defeating Jason Shuler and Dylan Tsoi. The third doubles match was left unfinished with both teams tied.
In singles competition, Govila and Abhishek Thorat each posted straight-set victories to put Columbia ahead. Vignesh Gogineni of Yale earned a win over Michael Zheng to narrow the margin before Nicolas Kotzen clinched the overall victory for Columbia with a tie-breaker win against Edward Liao. The remaining singles matches saw wins from both teams before Palta closed out the day with another victory for Columbia.
Columbia is scheduled to play next on Friday, April 10, when they travel to face No. 40 Penn at the Hamlin/Hecht Tennis Centers.
