The Columbia men’s tennis team, ranked No. 37, won its first Ivy League match of the season by defeating Brown University 4-0 on April 4 at the Varsity Tennis Courts in Providence.
This victory marks an important start to conference play for Columbia, which now holds an overall record of 11-6 and a conference record of 1-0. The team’s strong performance sets a positive tone as they continue their Ivy League schedule.
Columbia began the match by quickly securing the doubles point. Michael Zheng and Nicolas Kotzen defeated Ivan Sodan and Lukas Phimvongsa with a score of 6-0. Thanaphat Boosarawongse and Abhishek Thorat clinched the doubles point on court three with a 6-2 win over Cole Oberg and Elliott Wasserman. The pair Sachin Palta and Andrew Ena were leading their match when it was left unfinished.
In singles competition, Kotzen added to Columbia’s lead with a decisive 6-0, 6-1 victory over Phimvongsa on court two. Thorat followed shortly after by beating Zander Bravo on court five, winning both sets 6-1. Boosarawongse secured the overall team win with his straight-set victory against Wasserman on court four, finishing with scores of 6-4 and 6-2.
Other matches remained unfinished but saw Columbia players leading when play concluded: Zheng led Sodan (6-4, 4-1), Palta was tied with Robert Yang (6-4, 1-1), and Aditya Govila was ahead against Alex Koong (6-3, 5-3).
Columbia is scheduled to face Yale next in New Haven at 1 p.m., continuing its series of Ivy League matches.
