The Columbia men’s soccer team and Penn played to a 2-2 draw on Sunday at Rocco B. Commisso Soccer Stadium in New York, marking the Ivy League opener for both teams.

Columbia started strong when Jack McDaid scored his third goal of the season in the 13th minute. The play began with a long ball from Joe McDaid, which found Henning Myrvang in the box. Myrvang tapped it back into open space, allowing Jack McDaid to finish with a left-footed shot inside the left post.

Penn responded eight minutes later. George Herbert sent a long pass from midfield toward Patrick Cayelli, who managed to chip his shot over Columbia goalkeeper Dean Kelliher to tie the game at 1-1.

Before halftime, Penn nearly took the lead as Marco Bottene and Jack Wagoner each hit the crossbar. Penn outshot Columbia 10-5 in the first half, but only four of those combined shots were on target.

Early in the second half, Penn went ahead when Connor Dawson’s header hit the post and rebounded directly to Wagoner, who scored with his own header to make it 2-1.

Columbia equalized in the 70th minute. Connor Owen controlled possession outside the top-left corner of the box and passed low through Andres Garcia’s legs. Alessandro Franciosa collected it and fired a shot from outside the area to bring Columbia level again.

Columbia had chances late in the match but could not find a winning goal.

The Lions will continue Ivy League play next Saturday against Yale at Reese Stadium. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m.
