Columbia University Irving Medical Center (CUIMC) has announced a series of notable achievements and initiatives. Emile A. Bacha, a professor of surgery and chief of the Division of Cardiac, Thoracic, and Vascular Surgery, was named the 106th president of the American Association for Thoracic Surgery at their annual meeting in Seattle.

E. Sander Connolly has been recognized as president-elect at the recent American Association of Neurological Surgeons Annual Meeting in Boston and is set to serve as AANS President in 2026.

The CUIMC Update newsletter also highlighted Columbia Nursing’s chapter of Sigma Theta Tau, which recently celebrated its 60th anniversary at the School of Nursing.

In research news, Columbia experts are contributing to an evidence base linking women’s sleep quality with cardiovascular disease. Additionally, two ALS patients showed significant improvement following treatment with ulefnersen (formerly jacifusen), an experimental therapy developed by neurologist Dr. Neil Shneider in collaboration with Ionis Pharmaceuticals.

Throughout June to August, Columbia will offer free health resources every Tuesday at the Fort Washington Greenmarket through the ColumbiaDoctors booth.
