Columbia University announced on April 15 that several of its athletic teams will compete in events away from campus between April 16 and April 19. The sports involved include track and field, archery, heavyweight rowing, baseball, lacrosse, softball, and women’s tennis.
The announcement highlights a busy week for Columbia athletes. The track and field team will participate in multiple meets across the country after strong performances at the Rutgers Relays. First-year students Mia Hoskins and Marcus Blasucci led recent successes with event wins in the hammer throw and shot put respectively. The team is scheduled to appear at major invitationals including the Bryan Clay Invitational in California and others spanning Connecticut to Virginia.
The archery team is sending nine competitors to Florida’s Easton Foundations Gator Cup following a successful outing at the USA Archery Collegiate Target Regionals where Columbia won every gold medal it contested. Senior Lillian Han leads a group of recurve shooters while seniors Giselle DeSousa and Sydney Sullenberger represent the compound division.
In rowing, No. 25 Columbia will face No. 3 Yale and No. 19 Penn for the Blackwell Cup in Derby, Connecticut on Saturday. Baseball travels to Providence for an Ivy League series against Brown after defeating Fairfield earlier this week.
Lacrosse plays Dartmouth in New Hampshire as part of its final road trip of the season while softball visits Cornell for a three-game series following pitcher Mads Lawson’s record-setting performance last weekend against Yale. Women’s tennis faces Harvard and Dartmouth on the road as it seeks to secure an Ivy League Championship berth; despite a recent loss at Princeton, Columbia moved up to No. 49 nationally.
