Brooklyn, New York, July 1st – The New York City Council has voted to advance the casino bid in Coney Island, a decision that has sparked concern among local officials. The vote took place on June 30th and supports moving forward with the project known as “the Coney.”
Assemblyman Novakhov expressed his opposition to the council’s decision, emphasizing the impact on local residents. “While Coney Island is an entertainment heritage site it is also and most importantly home to tens of thousands of families,” he stated. He highlighted recent events that indicate a need for improved public safety and quality of life in South Brooklyn rather than a resort casino.
Novakhov pointed out that during beach season, emergency services already face challenges due to heavy traffic. He warned that adding a year-round casino could overwhelm existing infrastructure and emergency services. “The priorities are wrong,” he concluded.
