CCNY women’s volleyball opens season with losses to Albright and Rutgers-Newark

The City College of New York women’s volleyball team began its 2025 season with two matches at a tri-match event hosted by Rutgers-Newark on Saturday. The Beavers faced Albright College in their first match, falling 3–1.

Graduate student Gia Skenderi led CCNY with 14 kills, nine digs, six assists, and 19 total points. Junior Fatimah Coppin recorded a double-double, contributing 10 kills and 10 digs. Sophomore Ivanna Zamora Sanchez finished with five kills and seven points while hitting .417. Freshman setter Danuzia Caixeta Palmer managed the offense with 33 assists and added two service aces. Junior libero Rosalynda Russo collected a team-high 19 digs.

In the second match against Rutgers-Newark, Skenderi again led the Beavers with seven kills. Coppin contributed five kills and seven digs. Caixeta Palmer provided 13 assists and three service aces, while Russo had 13 digs in the back row. Middle blockers Serena Warner and Jia Liu Hua combined for three blocks at the net.

CCNY will play its next match on Thursday, September 11, against Maritime College in Throggs Neck, N.Y., scheduled for a 7:00 p.m. start.
