Two New York University athletes have received recognition as University Athletic Association (UAA) Athletes of the Week for their recent performances.
Caroline Peper, a senior on the women’s basketball team, averaged 20 points, four rebounds, four assists, and 1.5 steals over two games. Her efforts helped the #1-ranked Violets extend their winning streak to 86 games. In a close game against the University of Chicago, Peper made a three-pointer with 1:30 left to put her team ahead. After Chicago tied the score, she scored a layup with 29 seconds remaining and then secured the win by making two free throws with 18 seconds left.
Xavier Diaz competed at 125 pounds in wrestling at the Joseph Pellicano Invitational hosted by St. John Fisher University in Rochester, NY. Diaz won all three of his matches to claim the bracket title. He pinned Andrew Aparo in 1:47 during the quarterfinals and defeated Cael Stewart with another pin at 3:44 in the semifinals. In the final match, Diaz achieved a technical fall over Daniel Visha by a score of 17–2 in just over six minutes. Across all matches, Diaz recorded two falls and one technical fall.
