The New York Yankees are managing their lineup options as manager Aaron Boone balances playing time between Ben Rice and Paul Goldschmidt, according to an April 15 update. Boone informed Rice he would not start Tuesday’s game against a left-handed pitcher, Reid Detmers, but told him to be prepared for a key role off the bench.
This decision reflects the team’s strategy of maximizing offensive matchups while ensuring players like Rice remain ready for high-leverage situations. Boone said he values being able to “cherry pick” when to use Rice, who currently leads Major League Baseball in on-base percentage and OPS.
Rice said he is familiar with coming off the bench and preparing for pinch-hitting opportunities. “I had that a lot last year, so no different this year. I’m experienced with it, and I know if I’m not starting, there’s a good chance that I’m going to be in there in a high-leverage situation against one of their back-end righties,” Rice said.
Boone changed his initial plan to start Rice after Monday’s rally when Rice contributed by drawing a walk during an important inning and later singled against another left-handed pitcher. Boone explained, “I’ve just been able to so aggressively use Benny, even though he’s not in the starting lineup… I’ve been able to kind of fire him at the most important part – and it might be early in the game.” He also referenced Rice’s recent pinch-hit home run as evidence of his value off the bench.
Rice prepares by studying video on opposing relievers and using practice machines before games. He emphasized preparation: “That way, when the pinch AB does arrive, it doesn’t speed me up too much… I try to prepare as much as possible so I can go in with confidence.” When asked if this role suits him, he responded: “I sure hope so.”
Goldschmidt was re-signed by the Yankees earlier this year specifically for his success against left-handed pitching. Boone described Goldschmidt’s strength as being “really great against left-handed pitching.” While ideally giving both players regular at-bats regardless of pitcher handedness is preferred, current roster needs have led Boone to prioritize Goldschmidt versus southpaws.
Looking ahead, Boone said there may be more opportunities for Rice behind the plate but noted that most of his recent work has focused on first base rather than catching duties. Both player and manager expressed confidence that adjustments will continue as needed throughout the season.
