Billy Janzer has been appointed as the new assistant coach for the Columbia University wrestling program, according to an announcement from Andrew F. Barth Head Coach of Wrestling Donny Pritzlaff.

“We are thrilled to announce that Billy Janzer has joined Columbia Wrestling as an assistant coach,” Pritzlaff said. “Billy is an outstanding young coach, deeply committed to developing our students into champions both on and off the mat. We are very fortunate to have him join us and elevate our young men to new heights. Having maintained a close relationship with Billy for over a decade, I can attest that he will bring even more toughness and intensity to the team. We are excited to witness his professional progression and the significant impact he will have in New York City as we continue to advance our program’s championship culture.”

Janzer arrives at Columbia after working as a graduate assistant coach at The Citadel, where he was part of a season in which four wrestlers qualified for the NCAA Championships and three won conference titles. That year also saw sophomore Thomas Snipes named Southern Conference Tournament Most Outstanding Wrestler.

Before his role at The Citadel, Janzer led youth wrestling programs at Bunker Wrestling Club in Clayton, N.J., and American Wrestling & MMA club in Williamstown, N.J., focusing on skill development for athletes aged 5-18.

As a competitor, Janzer wrestled for Rutgers University, earning two NCAA National Qualifier honors and placing in the 2021 Big Ten tournament. He was a starter at 197 pounds during his final collegiate season and achieved wins over top-30 opponents, including No. 17 Cole Urbas during Rutgers’ victory over No. 21 Penn.

Throughout his collegiate career, Janzer recorded 48 wins and was named Rutgers’ dual meet scoring champion in 2020 with a record of 21-10. He finished that season ranked No. 18 by FloWrestling and Open Mat.

Janzer graduated from Rutgers in May 2023 with a degree in labor studies and employment relations. He is currently pursuing a master’s degree focused on athletic performance at The Citadel Graduate College.
