Later that day, at 21:18 UTC, he congratulated members of his fraternity with the post: “Happy Founders’ Day to my Brothers of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. @pbs_1914 #Sigma112 #pbs1914 https://t.co/Y0ZuEIUrFN”

Shortly after, at 21:53 UTC, Espaillat repeated this message in Spanish: “¡Feliz Día de la Fundación a mis hermanos de la fraternidad Phi Beta Sigma, Inc.! @pbs_1914 #Sigma112 #pbs1914”

Espaillat has represented New York’s 13th district in Congress since 2017 after succeeding Charles Rangel. Before his current role in Congress, he served in the New York State Assembly from 1997 to 2010 and then as a state senator from 2011 to 2016. Born in Santiago, Dominican Republic in 1954 and currently residing in Manhattan, Espaillat graduated from Queens College (City University of New York) with a BA in 1978.
