Adriano Espaillat, U.S. Congressman representing New York’s 13th district since 2017, expressed condolences and solidarity in a series of tweets following a fatal shooting involving the NYPD in Midtown Manhattan on July 29, 2025.
In his first post at 13:24 UTC, Espaillat wrote: “Expreso mis más sinceras condolencias a las familias de las víctimas y al agente del NYPD cuyas vidas fueron arrebatadas durante el tiroteo ocurrido hoy en Midtown Manhattan. Agradecemos la rápida actuación del NYPD, que respondió rápidamente para contener esta situación y”.
Later that day at 14:13 UTC, he paid tribute to the fallen officer by stating: “Our hearts grieve for the family of NYPD Officer Didarul Islam. His heroic actions and ultimate sacrifice will never be forgotten and may the memories of his life always be cherished by those who knew and loved him. We embrace the family of Officer Islam and the families of”.
At 14:59 UTC, Espaillat reiterated his support in Spanish: “Nos solidarizamos con la familia del agente del NYPD Didarul Islam. Sus heroicas acciones y su sacrificio supremo jamás serán olvidados, y que quienes lo conocieron y amaron siempre atesoren su memoria. Abrazamos a la familia del agente Islam y a las familias de cada una de las”.
Adriano Espaillat has served as U.S. Representative for New York’s 13th District since replacing Charles Rangel in 2017. He previously held positions in both the New York State Assembly (1997-2010) and State Senate (2011-2016). Born in Santiago, Dominican Republic in 1954, Espaillat resides in Manhattan and is an alumnus of Queens College, City University of New York.
