Adriano Espaillat, U.S. Congressman representing New York’s 13th district, posted on his Twitter account on August 6, 2025, about an incident involving himself and fellow Congress members during a congressional oversight visit at the Sunset Park Detention Center.

On August 6, Espaillat wrote: “.@ICEgov nos encerró a mí, a @NydiaVelazquez y al @RepDanGoldman entre la valla y la entrada del Centro de Detención de Sunset Park mientras intentábamos realizar nuestra supervisión del Congreso esta mañana. Esta flagrante falta de respeto hacia el Poder Legislativo es un”.

Later that day, Espaillat shared tributes to Lloyd Williams, President and CEO of The Greater Harlem Chamber of Commerce and Co-Founder of HARLEM WEEK. At 18:27 UTC, he stated: “Lloyd Williams, President and CEO of The Greater Harlem Chamber of Commerce and Co-Founder of HARLEM WEEK, was a friend and beloved member of our community. Through his lifetime of public service spanning more than 50 years, Lloyd was dedicated in his mission to ensuring Harlem’s”. He followed with a similar message in Spanish at 18:45 UTC: “Lloyd Williams, presidente y CEO de la Cámara de Comercio del Gran Harlem y cofundador de la SEMANA DE HARLEM, fue un amigo y un miembro muy querido de nuestra comunidad. A lo largo de sus más de 50 años de servicio público, Lloyd se dedicó a su misión de garantizar la vitalidad”.

Espaillat has served as the representative for New York’s 13th District since 2017 after succeeding Charles Rangel. Before joining Congress, he served in the New York State Assembly from 1997 to 2010 and the New York State Senate from 2011 to 2016. Born in Santiago, Dominican Republic in 1954 and currently residing in Manhattan at age 68, Espaillat graduated from Queens College (City University of New York) with a BA in 1978.
