Adriano Espaillat, U.S. Congressman representing New York’s 13th district since 2017, used his social media platform this week to criticize Republican actions on healthcare and document an incident involving Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) during a Congressional oversight visit.
On August 5, 2025, Espaillat posted: “Republicans launched the largest attack on Medicaid and Medicare programs we have ever seen, and it will hurt the people who can least afford it. We must fight back with everything we have to combat this extreme agenda that threatens the lives and livelihoods of millions of https://t.co/oukr7IbT2m”.
Later that day, he reiterated his message in Spanish: “Los republicanos lanzaron el mayor ataque contra los programas de Medicaid y Medicare que jamás hayamos visto, y perjudicará a quienes menos pueden costearlo. Debemos contraatacar con todas nuestras fuerzas para combatir esta agenda extrema que amenaza la vida y el sustento de” (August 5, 2025).
On August 6, Espaillat described an encounter at the Sunset Park Detention Center: “.@ICEgov locked me, @NydiaVelazquez and @RepDanGoldman between the fence and the building entrance of the Sunset Park Detention Center as we tried to conduct our Congressional oversight this morning. This blatant lack of respect towards the Legislative Branch is a deterioration https://t.co/T4YFUCeJoc”.
Espaillat has served in Congress since replacing Charles Rangel in 2017. He previously held positions in both the New York State Assembly from 1997 to 2010 and the New York State Senate from 2011 to 2016. Born in Santiago, Dominican Republic in 1954, Espaillat resides in Manhattan and graduated from Queens College, City University of New York in 1978 with a BA.
