Adriano Espaillat, U.S. Congressman representing New York’s 13th district since 2017, shared updates and condolences in a series of posts on X (formerly Twitter) from August 25 to August 26, 2025.

On August 25, Espaillat highlighted community engagement ahead of the new academic year, stating: “This weekend, Team Espaillat was all over NY-13 as families from all around the district are celebrating and preparing for the start of an incredible school year! Thank you to all of the local organizations and offices that hosted these events.”

Later that day, he addressed a recent tragedy involving students in his district: “We are saddened by the death of Columbia student, Xie Hongzhu, and each of the victims who lost their lives following the bus crash that occurred over the weekend. We offer our deepest condolences and embrace each of the families impacted by this tragedy.” The statement followed news reports regarding a fatal bus accident affecting members of the local academic community.

On August 26, Espaillat discussed infrastructure progress within East Harlem: “The Second Avenue Subway extension is one step closer to realization and I’m proud to have secured funding for a project of this magnitude that will deliver subway service to residents of East Harlem, one of the most transit-dependent neighborhoods in New York City. This is a”

Espaillat has served in Congress since succeeding Charles Rangel in 2017. Prior to his current role, he served in both chambers of New York’s state legislature—first as an Assembly member from 1997 to 2010 and then as a State Senator from 2011 to 2016. Born in Santiago, Dominican Republic in 1954 and now residing in Manhattan, Espaillat graduated with a BA from Queens College at CUNY in 1978.
