The New York Yankees won their home opener against the Miami Marlins on April 4, with Aaron Judge hitting a first-inning home run that helped lead the team to an 8-2 victory. The game marked one of the best seven-game starts in franchise history, with only the 1933 Yankees opening better.
This early success is notable for a club with high expectations following their recent pennant-winning season. Strong pitching, timely hitting, and athleticism have contributed to their performance so far.
Judge set the tone for his teammates before the game by instructing them to wear suits for the occasion. “There’s nothing like getting a chance to step into this box, in front of these fans,” Judge said. “It doesn’t matter if it’s a game in April or a game in October. There’s no better spot.”
Pitcher Will Warren held Miami to two solo home runs over five and two-thirds innings while striking out six batters without issuing a walk. “Solo homers aren’t going to beat us,” Warren said. “If we attack early, the odds are in our favor.” Manager Aaron Boone commented on his team’s overall play: “It’s early, but you love the fact that you get off to this kind of start. Wins are precious. The guys are obviously pitching as well as they are, but I think they’re also playing well, the all-around game.”
Ben Rice also contributed significantly by hitting a seventh-inning homer and adding a two-run double in the eighth inning after struggling earlier at bat. Boone praised Rice’s abilities: “Benny can really hit… I think he’s a middle-of-the-order hitter and is going to be for a long time.” Judge added about Rice: “He always hits the ball hard… He gets another 500 at-bats, I’m looking forward to seeing him really develop and have fun out there.”
Rice reflected on both his performance and his compliance with Judge’s dress code directive: “I had a few options… I knew after my first year that I definitely couldn’t be caught without one because Cap likes to make sure we’re wearing them now and then.”
With this win, New York improved its record in home openers at Yankee Stadium since its current iteration opened.
