Yankees manager Aaron Boone was ejected on Apr. 17 after disputing a balk call during the team’s 11-4 loss to the Los Angeles Angels at Yankee Stadium. The incident marked Boone’s first ejection of the season.
The event occurred following the eighth inning when home-plate umpire Will Little removed Boone from the game. Boone said he sought clarification about a balk that had been called against pitcher Ryan Yarbrough during an at-bat by Mike Trout.
“I still haven’t got good clarity,” Boone said. “I just wanted to hear their explanation.”
During the play, first baseman Ben Rice was positioned behind runner Zach Neto and moved in to field Yarbrough’s pickoff throw, which led to the balk ruling and allowed runners to advance. “I think it’s a fine play,” Boone said. “The throw was a little off, but we’re clearly going to the bag to try and pick off [Neto] in that situation.”
Afterward, Trout received an intentional walk before Jo Adell hit a grand slam, extending the Angels’ lead.
Boone’s ejection is his 47th as a manager. He has either tied or led all American League managers in ejections each season from 2021 through 2025, with seven coming last year—the most in Major League Baseball for that season.
“I wanted what I thought should have been more of an explanation,” Boone said. “So I went out to talk to [first-base umpire] Ryan [Additon] out at first. And [crew chief] Lance [Barksdale] cut me off.”
Boone’s continued presence among league leaders in managerial ejections highlights his active engagement with umpires over on-field decisions.
