U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand visited St. John’s University in Queens, NY, to discuss cybersecurity issues and career opportunities with students, faculty, and administrators. During her visit, Senator Gillibrand emphasized the importance of training the next generation of cyber defenders and protectors. She encouraged students to apply to the Cyber Service Academy scholarship program, highlighting the unlimited employability that comes with a career in cybersecurity.

St. John’s University, recognized for its National Center of Academic Excellence (NCAE) in Cybersecurity status and its National Security Agency (NSA) designation, is one of only 19 New York institutions eligible to offer the Cyber Service Academy program. The program, which includes free college tuition in exchange for public service in the Department of Defense, aims to prepare students for careers in cybersecurity and related fields.

Senator Gillibrand's tour of the Sanford Family Cyber Security Lab showcased the University's commitment to providing cutting-edge education in cybersecurity. The lab, equipped with state-of-the-art technology, allows students to engage in hands-on activities such as intrusion detection, network defense, incident response, and malware analysis.

Speaking at the event, Tom Grech, President and CEO of the Queens Chamber of Commerce, highlighted the need for a well-trained cyber security workforce to support businesses in the area. Stephanie Raphael, Chief of Staff at NYC Cyber Command, encouraged students to explore internships and career opportunities in the rapidly growing field.

As the discussion concluded, Senator Gillibrand proposed organizing more cyber security career fairs and forums to connect students with job opportunities and educational resources. Participants, including current students like Raymond Ramdat and Katarina Kobetitsch, expressed their enthusiasm for the cybersecurity culture at St. John’s and their academic journey in the field.

The Sanford Family Cyber Security Lab at St. John’s University stands as a testament to the institution's dedication to preparing students to safeguard our digital infrastructure. Named in honor of alumna Linda S. Sanford, the lab provides students with the tools and resources needed to excel in the field of cybersecurity.
